Jane, a brave and sensual Englishwoman, is caught in a deadly romantic triangle between rival spies Ellis and Jean-Pierre. Love, hatred, and deception sweep them from terrorist conspiracies in Paris to full-tilt guerrilla warfare in Afghanistan.

The plot never lets up, and the characters brave death with astounding courage, in a tempestuous climate of violence and passionate jealousy.

Lie Down with Lions (Audible Audio Edition) John Nettles Ken Follett Pan Macmillan Publishers Ltd Books

Ken Follett is one of my favorite authors, and he delivers. This book had a fast pace, and I could not put it down. The action, culture, and war action in Afganistan seemed very well done. He did his research well. The sex scene was erotic and yet handled with sensitivity. It reminded me of Pearl Buck's "The Good Earth." The plot has clever twists, and presents a quandry for the woman in love with both men, as both "lions" are strong characters and each believes themselves to be right with strong conviction while being of opposing cultural and political beliefs. The good guy-bad guy really keeps you guessing a possible outcome. This story could have ended differently, as at every turn either or all of the three main characters could have died. I don't think I could have survived the treck to freedom. War is not pretty, and survival is tough, especially if you are an American woman in the war there. Follett does an excellent job of detailing how these characters do so, except one of them. Readers will find this an exciting read that keeps the action and suspense building right up to the end. Lie Down with Lions (Audible Audio Edition) John Nettles Ken Follett Pan Macmillan Publishers Ltd Books Reviews

Fabulous read! I was nearly biting my fingernails toward the end and tempted to skip to the final couple of pages. But did not.
I love all of Ken Follett's books; he is a master of story telling and suspense. I highly recommend this one.
Lie Down With Lions rivals Follett's previous standard Eye of the Needle, with many of the same type of characters and situations that made both hard to put down. Multi-dimensional protagonists/antagonists, strong heroine, rapidly changing situation, tension, but now with the Afghan terrain playing a key role in the story as oppose to a remote windswept island. A great read.
This is a fast-paced narrative with a love story interwoven with a real historical situation in Afghanistan. The writing is superb with the feelings of each of the characters finely analyzed and expressed. It is a book I shall remember and one I strongly recommend.
I am a big Follett fan. I have read most of his books, and the ones I have not read are waiting in my Kindel. So my review is going to be biased.

Lie Down with Lions spins multiple plot lines and great character development ( Folletts greatest strength). By the time the plots are revealed you find you cannot put the book down. You have become invested in the many characters.

Another great Follett strength is the accuracy of his writing. When you finish the book you feel like putting a pin in the world map, pinning another place you have traveled to. You know the country, you smell the country, you feel the country. You have been there.
Since Ken Follett is one of my favorite authors, it would be almost impossible for me to give anything but a positive review of one of his novels. I found this one interesting and intriguing because it's set in Afghanistan, and tells of a daring escape and cross country hide and seek game from a traitorous and jealous Frenchman who is a Doctor, and who also works for the KGB as a spy and informant against the Mujahadeen during the time of the Soviet Unions invasion of that country. He tries to stop, and kill, an American CIA man, who is the former lover of the Frenchman's naive, ignorant, and idealistic current wife, who finds her and escapes with she and her newborn child across Afghanistan, to Pakistan. The Frenchman's jealous hatred of the American, and his obsession with possessing his child, is more motivation for him to find them and kill them than his concern for his wife and the KGB. It made for an interesting and intriguing read, and was hard to put down.
I am a Ken Follett fan. Probably have read most of his books. Like chefs, writers are not good at all aspects of writing, and Mr. Follett, have failed, conscioulsy or unconsciously, to recognize that. He insists giving details of sexual encounters that fall into pornography. It is almost laughable the way he handles romantic situations. Also, at times, mayor behavioral actions are totally erratic and without any validation, based on the previous background of the character involved. For instance, when Jane does not detonate the bomb because the approacing Russian soldiers were young and had mothers, despite that the decision would imply death under brutal torment for Ellis, her lover, is totally unbelievable. As it is the rationalization of her decision based on the fact that they din't want to kill her. This whole segment is pathetic. Still, he is a master in developing plots. JAS
My sister is a real fan of Ken Follet. She has worked her way through most of his many novels and can't get enough of his well researched stories. She missed this one and asked me to order it for her. She loved it said it certainly didn't disappoint.
